VALORBORN COMBAT GUIDE: MASTER THE DAMAGE SYSTEM

Combat in Valorborn is not a button-mashing experience. Every engagement is a calculated risk involving weapon selection, armor matchups, stamina management, and positioning. Understanding the underlying damage formula — officially detailed by Laps Games in Dev Diary 03 — transforms you from a desperate survivor into a tactical predator capable of handling even the most dangerous threats in Thareon.

This guide breaks down every component of Valorborn's combat system: weapon classes, the Physical vs. Penetration damage split, armor layers, dodging, blocking, and how stamina ties it all together. Use the Beginner's Guide first if you haven't yet.

THE VALORBORN DAMAGE FORMULA EXPLAINED

According to the official DEV Diary 03, every combat hit in Valorborn processes through the following sequence:

  1. 1
Physical Damage: The base damage of your weapon swing, reduced by the target's Physical Defense stat (determined by their armor).
  2. 2
Penetration Damage: A secondary damage channel that bypasses Physical Defense entirely. Only the target's Penetration Reduction stat mitigates it.
  3. 3
Dodge Check: Before damage is applied, the target's Dodge Chance is rolled. A successful dodge nullifies the entire hit — both Physical and Penetration components.
  4. 4
Block Check: If not dodged and the target is actively blocking, their block stat absorbs the majority of both damage types, leaving only a small fraction.
  5. 5
Final Application: Remaining damage is applied to health. Future updates may introduce critical locations, with strong penetrating hits having a chance to cause dismemberment.

WEAPON CLASSES — FULL COMPARISON

Choosing the wrong weapon against the wrong enemy type is the most common cause of unnecessary character death in Valorborn. This table summarizes the tradeoffs:

Weapon Physical Dmg Penetration Speed Stamina Cost Best Against
⚔️ Greatsword Very High Low Slow Very High Unarmored / Light armor
🏹 Spear Medium Very High Medium Medium Heavy armor / Undead / Trolls
🗡️ Dagger Low Medium Very Fast Low Stealth kills / Light armor
🛡️ Shield + 1H Sword Low-Medium Low Medium Low-Medium Tank role / Any (defensive)
🪓 Axe / Mace High Medium-High Medium High Medium armor / Groups

HOW ARMOR WORKS IN VALORBORN

Armor in Valorborn is not a single stat but a two-channel defense system. Physical Defense reduces incoming Physical Damage. Penetration Reduction reduces incoming Penetration Damage. These two stats are independent — a character can have extremely high Physical Defense but near-zero Penetration Reduction, making them vulnerable to spear attacks despite looking heavily armored.

When building your tank character, balance both stats. Stacking only plate armor gives massive Physical Defense but leaves the penetration channel exposed. Look for armor pieces that offer both stats, or compensate with active Blocking to cover the gap.

STAMINA — THE INVISIBLE KILLER

Every action in Valorborn's combat system costs stamina: attacking, dodging, blocking, and even walking while heavily encumbered. When stamina reaches zero, your character becomes helpless — unable to attack, dodge, or flee. In most encounters, an empty stamina bar means death.

🏋️ Heavy Armor + Greatsword

Massive stamina drain per swing. Best for tank roles with high Toughness investment.

🥷 Light Armor + Dagger

Minimal stamina cost. Can sustain extended engagements without resting.

🛡️ Blocking Stance

Drains stamina but absorbs most incoming damage. Essential for tanks.

⚡ Dodging

High stamina cost per dodge. Requires Agility investment to maintain in extended fights.

ADVANCED COMBAT TACTICS

  1. 01
Pre-combat stealth kill: Before any major engagement, send your Scout character into stealth mode. A successful stealth kill on one or two enemies before open combat shifts the numbers significantly in your favor. See our Stealth Guide for detailed execution.
  2. 02
Target priority: In group fights, eliminate ranged attackers and unarmored fast-strikers first. They drain your stamina the fastest through repeated low-damage hits that accumulate faster than your recovery rate.
  3. 03
Weapon swap mid-fight: If you encounter an unexpectedly armored enemy, switching from greatsword to spear can turn a losing fight into a quick kill. Pre-equip both weapon sets on characters you expect to face varied enemy types.
  4. 04
Retreat is not failure: Unlike many RPGs, tactical retreat in Valorborn is a legitimate strategy. If stamina is low and enemies are still standing, disengage, recover, and re-engage. A rested party beats an exhausted one every time.

COMBAT FAQ

There is no universally best weapon — match your weapon to the enemy's armor. Greatswords excel against lightly armored foes (Cannibal Tribes, unarmored bandits) because of their massive Physical Damage. Spears are the best choice against heavy armor (guards, knights, Undead Guardians) due to their high Penetration Damage that bypasses Physical Defense entirely. Daggers shine for stealth builds requiring fast kills before detection.
Equip a spear or any high-penetration weapon. Penetration Damage bypasses Physical Defense and is only reduced by the separate Penetration Reduction stat. Most early and mid-game heavily armored enemies have low Penetration Reduction, meaning a spear will deal near-full damage to them regardless of their armor rating.
Stamina is the most critical combat resource. Running out of stamina mid-fight means you cannot attack, dodge, or flee — which typically means death. Heavy armor + heavy weapons drain stamina fastest. Always maintain at least 20% stamina reserves. Build a Toughness-focused character for a tank role, as Toughness governs stamina pool size.
Penetration Damage is a secondary damage type that all weapons deal in addition to Physical Damage. It ignores Physical Defense entirely and is only mitigated by the Penetration Reduction stat on the target. High-penetration weapons like spears deal most of their damage through this channel, making them extremely effective against well-armored opponents.
Full limb targeting is on the development roadmap but not yet implemented in Early Access. Laps Games has confirmed that in a near-future update, certain powerful hits combining high penetration values with strong strikes may have a chance to cause dismemberment. This is distinct from the full limb-targeting system planned for later development.
For a melee damage dealer: prioritize Agility for One-Handed Sword, Spear, and Dodging. For a tank: prioritize Toughness for Blocking, heavy armor effectiveness, and stamina pool. For a berserker-style build: Strength for Axes, Maces, and maximum carry capacity with heavy weapons. Never split evenly between all three — specialize from day one.
