VALORBORN FACTIONS GUIDE: THAREON, ENEMIES & POLITICS
The faction system in Valorborn is not a backdrop — it's a living political engine that operates with full autonomy. Kingdoms rise and fall, guilds expand their influence, and local power struggles play out entirely without player input. Understanding how to navigate, exploit, and influence these faction dynamics is one of the deepest skills in the game.
This guide covers the Kingdom of Thareon (the Early Access starting region), the autonomous faction mechanics system, the four enemy categories you'll encounter, and the four primary strategies for navigating political life in Valorborn's medieval world.
THE KINGDOM OF THAREON
"The great empire of Allarion once unified all races and factions under a single banner, powered by magic that drove everything from household chores to the greatest feats of engineering. But this reliance on magic slowly began to corrupt both body and mind. The inevitable Cataclysm shattered the empire into warring kingdoms, each bearing the scars of what magic had done to the world."
In the current Valorborn Early Access, all gameplay takes place in Thareon — a kingdom forged from the ashes of the Allarion Cataclysm. Thareon was built on a singular conviction: magic caused the Cataclysm, and magic must be eradicated. The kingdom actively hunts and executes anyone found using or harboring magic, enforced by an elite religious order whose members wear rune-inscribed garments that detect magical energy.
This creates a tense, paranoid atmosphere throughout the kingdom. NPCs live under constant surveillance. Information is currency. And the ruins of old Allarion — filled with magical artifacts and undead guardians — litter the landscape as monuments to what happens when power goes unchecked. As a new arrival to this world, you can serve the order, secretly undermine it, or simply survive in the cracks between its rigid laws.
Serve the crown and hunt magic users for bounties
Secretly harbor or aid magic users for profit
Exploit the fear and chaos of faction conflict
Play kingmaker between rival noble houses
HOW THE FACTION SYSTEM WORKS
Each faction in Valorborn operates with full AI autonomy. They pursue survival, expansion, and power entirely independent of the player. Each faction maintains an independent reputation meter for your character. This meter governs every interaction you have within their sphere of influence — from trade prices to whether their guards let you walk through the city gate.
Higher faction reputation → cheaper prices in their territory
Low/negative reputation → merchants refuse to trade, guards attack on sight
Completing faction contracts → reputation increases
Stealing from faction members → reputation decreases
Killing faction leaders → permanent hostility flag
4 FACTION STRATEGIES FOR VALORBORN PLAYERS
Tip the Balance
Sell information or complete contracts for the weaker faction to prolong conflict — more work and loot opportunities for you.
Exploit Chaos
Let two factions fight. Loot both sides after the battle ends. No reputation cost, maximum profit.
Deep Alliance
Commit to one faction for exclusive contracts, safe passage in their territory, and unique gear rewards.
Stay Neutral
Avoid faction-locking yourself. Harder to get specialized contracts but no reputation penalties from any side.
ENEMY TYPES IN VALORBORN
Thareon is populated by far more than just rival factions. The Valorborn world contains four major enemy categories, each requiring different tactical approaches:
Cannibal Tribes
📍 Wilderness and forests
Organized groups that ambush travelers. Dangerous in numbers. Prioritize their ranged attackers first.
Cave Troll
📍 Caves and mountain passes
A confirmed mid-game boss-tier enemy. High body mass gives it enormous physical defense. Use spears (penetration) rather than greatswords. Do not engage solo early game.
Undead Guardians
📍 Ancient ruins and crypts
Far more dangerous than human enemies. Guard Allarion-era ruins. Immune to morale effects. Spear + shield party composition recommended.
Wildlife
📍 Open wilderness
Small animals are safe hunting targets early. Large predators in deeper wilderness can kill an unprepared party in seconds.
City Guards (Hostile)
📍 Towns and roads
Trigger when you have an active bounty. The higher your bounty, the more guards respond. Avoid towns until bounty clears or use disguise.
